About

Professor Dr. Can Gönen was born in 1976 in Ankara. After graduating from Dokuz Eylül University School of Medicine in 1999, he completed his Internal medicine residency at Hacettepe University in 2004. In 2001, Dr. Gönen worked as a researcher at Oslo University Biotechnology Center/Norway in the field of cancer genetics.

Between 2004-2007 he completed gastroenterology residency in Dokuz Eylül University School of Medicine, and afterwards appointed for the compulsory service for Ministry of Health in Kutahya State Hospital.

In 2010, Dr. Gönen has been awarded the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) Fellowship, and worked in the field of advanced endoscopy (endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP) at Endoscopy Unit of Gentofte Hospital, Copenhagen University/Denmark.

From 2011 to 2018, he was the chief and associate professor of Gastroenterology Department at Haydarpasa Numune Training and Research Hospital. In 2016, he was awarded second time as an ESGE Fellow and worked in the field of advanced endoscopy (endoscopic submucosal dissection, POEM) in Saint Luc Hospital, Leuven University/Belgium.

In 2018, Dr. Gönen was awarded Turkish Gastroenterological Society scholarship and he has worked at Advanced Endoscopy Section of Johns Hopkins University where he specialized in endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, EUS-guided gastroenterostomy and G/Z-POEM. Dr Gönen is a fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology.

Professor Dr. Can Gönen has began to work in Acıbadem Kozyatağı Hospital Gastroenterology Unit since september 2018.

Professor Dr. Can Gönen’s main interest areas are advanced endoscopy and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Dr. Gönen is the author of more than 100 papers published in international and Turkish journals or gastroenterology textbooks. He has been consulting several pharmaceutical companies for IBD treatment, and joining phase III drug development programs as principle investigator.
